What's Happening at the RMTAO

Welcome to a new membership year!

I would like to welcome everyone to a new membership year. Thank you all for renewing. We really appreciate your support especially during what has been a very challenging time. An investment in the Association is one of the most tangible ways you can invest in the future of the profession.

We have a lot of great plans for the coming membership year that I would like to share. We are increasing our emphasis on our advocacy which includes ramping up our HST/GST exemption advocacy with the Canadian Massage Therapist Alliance now that the election is over. Some of our other objectives for this upcoming membership year are:
  • Engaging with the government to promote the importance of massage therapy for the health and well-being of Canadians and push for the general interests of RMTs in Ontario.
  • Connecting with other healthcare professions to position massage therapy as a strong complement to other healthcare professions and become part of the circle of care of patients.
  • Engaging with insurance companies to educate them on importance of massage therapy for health and wellness of Canadians and uphold the interests of RMTs.
We are  also continuing to improve our Education Program and have some great upcoming webinars for the rest of 2021. We also plan to have some in person sessions towards the end of this new membership year, COVID permitting.

We will continue to develop campaigns to educate the general public on the importance of massage therapy to their health and wellbeing. I am also looking forward to doing a number of regional townhalls next spring to have the opportunity to connect directly with members across Ontario. We will also continue to support and facilitate the development of additional massage therapy research and ensure RMTs have access to research and are able to understand and apply it

These are just some of our plans for the 2021-2022 membership year. I also invite any of our members to contact me at michael@rmtao.com if you have any questions or concerns.

And if you haven't renewed already - you can still renew online at RMTAO.com

October Webinars

The RMTAO has a lot of great upcoming webinars covering a variety of relevant topics for RMTs. This includes two great webinars coming up this month!

Our first October webinar is Effective Networking: Communicate to Influence the TED way which will be held on October 13 at 11:30 am.

Effective Networking: Communicate to Influence the TED way
In this webinar presented by Emilie McKay, you will learn about the importance of networking, learn to create an effective elevator pitch using TED methods, and learn to use your networking skills outside the clinic with peers, other health professionals, business owners and the public in general.

In October we will also be offering A Person-Centered Approach to Evidence-Based Practice. This webinar will be presented on October 26 at 10 a.m. by Monica Noy.

A Person-Centered Approach to Evidence-Based Practice
This webinar will provide an overview of the differences between Person-Centred and Evidence-Based Practice and how to meld the two in an evidence-informed massage therapy setting. Participants will be introduced to the CauseHealth Project, which offers a unique view of understanding causal narratives in healthcare and provides some clinically relevant tools that can be adapted for RMT use.

These are just two of the webinars offered by the RMTAO for the rest 2021.

Member Question of the Week

I noticed a complementary RMTFind listing on my membership receipt. What is that?

All RMTAO members get one free listing on RMTFind.com with their RMTAO membership.

RMTFind.com is an online tool for people to find an RMT, and this is a great tool to market your practice. Members of the public are able to search RMTFind.com by postal code, city or name to find the best RMT for them in their area.

If you would like to have more than one business address listed on RMTFind.com, you can purchase additional listings for $12 per listing, per year.

To add or update your listing, log on to RMTAO.com and click on My RMTFind.com Listing in the menu on the left side of your screen. From this page you can add or update your listing, and also purchase additional listings.

It is important to remember that the RMTAO does not maintain these listings, and each member is responsible for adding and keeping their own listing up to date.

Do you have a question? Email info@rmtao.com

Business Tip of the Week

Stop Procrastinating on Your Big Goal

When a goal seems particularly onerous, or the path toward achieving it feels unclear, it’s easy to just do nothing and push it off to another day. This is a mistake. Here are three strategies to start tackling that goal you've been putting off:
  • Hire a coach or look for a mentor. Having someone to support and encourage you can make a big difference. They can be particularly helpful in holding you accountable, especially when you start telling yourself you’re “too busy” to make progress.
  • Create deadlines. You don’t need to be overly ambitious — “I'll finish writing my book by this time next year.” Instead, lay out smaller, more attainable milestones — “I'll finish a chapter in the next six weeks” — which will allow you to build and sustain momentum.
  • Don't stop learning. If your goal is tied to a specific circumstance — presenting at a high-profile conference, or running a marathon — it’s easy to let up once the big event is over. But after you’ve put in all that work, it’s important to solidify your learning, and keep growing. Find ways to bake the skills and habits you picked up along the way into your schedule on an ongoing basis. For instance, look for other opportunities to continue to hone your presentation skills or start running with a friend to make it a social ritual.

Research Article of the Week

Effectiveness of massage therapy on fatigue and pain in patients with multiple sclerosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Background: Fatigue and pain are prevalent symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS) and frequent complaint in MS patients, which reduce their quality of life. This study aimed to assess the effect of massage therapy on pain and fatigue in MS Patients.

Method: The original and Persian databases were searched included PubMed, web of science, embase, ovid, scopus, and the Cochrane Library, SID, and Iranedex from inception to November 2020. Studies that reported the effect of massage on fatigue and pain were included. Two investigators extracted all relevant data, independently. For deriving analysis, mean difference (MD) and standardized mean difference (SMD) were used.

Result: Ten studies were eligible acoording criteria. The effect of massage on fatigue showed significant improvement (−1.62; 95% CL −2.40, −0.83; p < .00001), also results of the systematic review showed a significant reduction in pain severity.

Conclusion: Massage as a complementary and non-pharmacological therapy might have been associated with alleviating fatigue and pain in M.S. patients. Based on the current study, massage intervention for MS patients could have possible clinical value for palliating pain and fatigue and improving quality of life; however, this matter needs further and more significant trial studies.
