What's Happening at the RMTAO

Virtual Education Conference Thank You

This past Sunday and Monday, we had our first virtual RMTAO Educational Conference. This year’s conference was entirely virtual due to the pandemic.

Attendance was excellent and the speakers and presentations were exceptional. Personally, I was amazed at all of the added features of the conference from the networking opportunities, to the trade show, to contests etc.

I would like to express my appreciation to all those who made the conference such a success. I would particularly like to thank the  RMTAO Team: Hariti Malhotra, who was the lead on the project; Jill Haig, Laura Fixman and Angela Paton.

I would also like to thank our keynote speakers: Dr. Emma Seppälä and Dr. Rumeet Billan. Dr. Seppala, despite a personal emergency, was able to get us a copy of her keynote address early on day two.

To our Panel: Jennifer Fleming, Pamela Fitch and Erin Whyte, I would like to thank you for facilitating such a lively discussion.

To our session presenters: Jocelyn Kirton; Emilie McKay; Robert Haddow; Amy Reid; Dani Faucher; Kim Dunlop; Lori Eisler, Jonathan Maister, Richard Lebert and Andreina Lujan-Sikorski, I would like to thank you all for sharing your expertise on diverse topics relating to rehabiIitation and self care.

I would also like to thank our sponsors: Massage Addict; Hand and Stone; Robertson Hall Insurance; Telus and OPIS Supplies.

Finally I would like to thank everyone who attended and enjoyed the conference! This new format would not have been a success without your support.

We hope to make our conference an annual event, next year offering a hybrid option of in-person or virtual. I am already looking forward to next year's conference.

- Michael Feraday, Executive Director & CEO, RMTAO

Advocacy Update

We are well into our patient story advocacy campaign targeting the Ministry of Health, all MPPs and other influencers and selected media.

As has been previously reported in the Friday File, we started this campaign in January 2021 to send out stories from patients that underscored the value RMTs bring to their patients, the health system and the overall health and wellness of Ontarians.

We will send out our sixth patient story on July 2. As follow up, I am reaching out to key people in the government relating to this intitiative. The goal is to better integrate massage therapy into the emerging vision of health care in Ontario, which embraces a team-based, wellness approach. I think we all know RMTs have a lot to offer in support of this vision.

Ontario Health, Ontario Health Teams, Family Health Teams and Community Health Teams are all important players in this space. While it will take time to advocate and enact change in the health system, my early meetings have been encouraging. I will continue to provide members with updates as we move forward especially now that key influencers and decision makers are more accessible as we emerge from the pandemic.

Common Vaccine Questions

As the COVID-19 vaccine rollout continues to accelerate, and many RMTs begin getting their second doses, many questions have cropped up regarding the vaccines as they relate to RMT practice.

Many RMTs have asked if they can ask their patients whether or not they have been vaccinated, and the CMTO has said this can be part of regular collection and updating of health history information, and patients can also choose to share this information independently.

RMTs have also asked if they are required to disclose whether or not they have been vaccinated to their patients. Since vaccination status is personal health information, RMTs are not required to disclose this to their patients. However, you can dislose this to your patients if you'd like.

The CMTO COVID-19 vaccine FAQs, which is on their COVID-19 page under the Vaccination Information drop down, cover a lot of other common concerns about vaccines. This includes how to respond if a patient asks you about vaccines, whether an employer can require a COVID vaccine, and more.

Busting Myths about Lactate and Lactic Acid

Some massage therapists believe that they can “release toxins” from your body during a massage — or least accelerate the process. But basic human physiology does not support this popular massage myth that often gets passed on.

Lactic acid is one “toxin” often given notoriety in the massage and fitness world for being the cause of many deep burn recovery days. The term “lactic acid” is often incorrectly interchanged with “lactate,” and though they are used in the same context, they are two different substances due to a one proton difference between the two.

It has commonly been taught that lactate is the basis for delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), but there is nothing scientific that supports this teaching.

Member Question of the Week

I'm in need of some legal advice, is there anything the RMTAO can do to help?

RMTAO members who purchased their insurance through the Trisura Portal have access to their free legal assistance hotline.

There is no limit to the amount of times you can call the hotline, and you can speak with a lawyer for as long as you need.

If you purchased your insurance through the Trisura Portal, you can find the information about how to access the hotline on the second page of your insurance coverage certificate.

If you purchased your insurance directly through the RMTAO instead of the Trisura Portal, there is a list of lawyers with significant experience working with RMTs that we can provide you, and many of them will offer a free 30 minute consultation.

Business Tip of the Week

Focus on These 5 Relationships to Supercharge Your Career

No matter what stage you’re at in your career, one of the most important things you can do is build relationships. But which ones are most important to your future success? Here are five that will help you accelerate your path to a promotion, increase your visibility within an organization, and become the leader you aspire to be.

Mentor: Think of a mentor as the north star that will keep you on track when you’re feeling lost at work. They are the one person inside (or outside) of your organization who you can turn to for guidance — whether you are looking to expand your industry knowledge, navigate a difficult conversation, listen to feedback on a project, or get some encouragement when times are tough.

Sponsor: While mentors give you advice and perspective, sponsors advocate on your behalf (especially in front of other company leaders) and in some cases, directly bring you career opportunities.

Partner: A partner is an ally or peer who can serve as a sounding board to broaden your perspective. This relationship is fueled by trust, a shared drive to succeed, and the recognition that you can do better together.

Competitor: Competition between peers is inevitable, and not always unhealthy. When used correctly, a friendly contest can inspire you to perform better, come up with new ideas, and get more done.

Mentee: Becoming a mentor will teach you how to bring out the best in others, recognize their strengths, give feedback, and coach. In turn, it will push you to do your own job better and strive for more.

Research Article of the Week

The association between health care professional attitudes and beliefs and the attitudes and beliefs, clinical management, and outcomes of patients with low back pain: a systematic review

Background: It has been suggested that health care professional (HCP) attitudes and beliefs may negatively influence the beliefs of patients with low back pain (LBP), but this has not been systematically reviewed. This review aimed to investigate the association between HCP attitudes and beliefs and the attitudes and beliefs, clinical management, and outcomes of this patient population.

Methods: Electronic databases were systematically searched for all types of studies. Studies were selected by predefined inclusion criteria. Methodological quality was appraised and strength of evidence was determined.

Results: Seventeen studies from eight countries which investigated the attitudes and beliefs of general practitioners, physiotherapists, chiropractors, rheumatologists, orthopaedic surgeons and other paramedical therapists were included. There is strong evidence that HCP beliefs about back pain are associated with the beliefs of their patients. There is moderate evidence that HCPs with a biomedical orientation or elevated fear avoidance beliefs are more likely to advise patients to limit work and physical activities, and are less likely to adhere to treatment guidelines. There is moderate evidence that HCP attitudes and beliefs are associated with patient education and bed rest recommendations. There is moderate evidence that HCP fear avoidance beliefs are associated with reported sick leave prescription and that a biomedical orientation is not associated with the number of sickness certificates issued for LBP.

Conclusion: HCPs need to be aware of the association between their attitudes and beliefs and the attitudes and beliefs and clinical management of their patients with LBP.
