What's Happening at the RMTAO
Ontario Announces Stay-at-Home Order
The Ontario government has issued a province-wide Stay-at-Home order until at least Thursday, May 6th, 2021. The Ontario government is requiring everyone to remain at home except for essential purposes, such as going to the grocery store or pharmacy, accessing health care services (including getting vaccinated), for exercise close to home and with the people you live with, or for work that cannot be done remotely.
Although the restrictions do not directly impact the ability of Massage Therapists (MTs/RMTs) to provide healthcare services, the existing shutdown of establishments such as spas and gyms may impact some RMTs and clients. No further restrictions on Massage Therapy practice have been announced.
As was the case in previous lockdowns and stay-at-home orders, the RMTAO and the CMTO will keep a close eye on the situation, and any updates are likley to come from the CMTO in their role as a regulator.

Advocacy Update - Coalition Strategic Priorities
As many members are aware, the RMTAO works with a number of groups of other associations that have similar interests to the RMTAO. I have been very active in supporting and working with these collectives. One of the most active groups in advocating with the insurance industry is the Coalition of Health Professions in Auto Insurance (the Coalition).
Recently the Coalition set our strategic priorities for our advocacy for the coming year. They are listed below. This was my fist opportunity to be involved in this strategic discussion and I was pleased to be able to ensure that all of the priorities would be relevant to our members. It is also indicative of the common issues all our associations have in dealing with insurance companies and the value of working together with a collective voice. The list is not in order of priority or comrprehensive of all priorities.
Inadequacy of fees
- Fee schedules of EHC funding for some health professionals does not reflect fee guides (and has not changed in years).
- Fee codes may not reflect nature of assessment, treatment and care (i.e., not all care is compatible with discrete/piecework funding codes).
- Very large inter- and intra-variation in EHC coverage among health professionals (with some having little to none) that frustrates patients (and often lead to poor patient satisfaction ratings)
Audits, delisting and shadow regulation
- Inappropriate efforts by insurers to find fraud (e.g., using misleading communications on forms and/or invalid data).
- No transparency regarding delisting and relisting of providers and clinics (with no deference to regulatory colleges).
- Insurer policy changes that are out of step with the broader health policy landscape (e.g., some insurers eliminating EHC coverage for physiotherapy for 65+ because physio is covered by OHIP in some instances)
Insurers entry into business of health care delivery
- Marketing of services, defining basket of care, and owning health care.
- Misleading marketing (e.g., full mental health coverage but providing only limited online services).
- Use of patient satisfaction reviews within preferred provider networks – poor survey/questionnaire construction; providers rated for things beyond their control.
- Opportunities that may exist to leverage efforts of some providers (e.g., Sunlife via Lumino) to position themselves as a leader in supporting health and wellbeing of Canada.
These issues impact the practices of RMTs and of other health professionals across Ontario. I look forward to the opportunity to work with the other associations as part of the Coalition to advocate to address these issues.

Member Question of the Week
The clinic I work at has asked to put their name and address on my insurance certificate. Is that required?
Your professional liability insurance will follow you wherever you happen to work and will cover you at any and all locations where you work. There is no requirement from an insurance standpoint to have the address of every place you work on your insurance certificate.
The address on your insurance certificate is just where the $3000 of office contents insurance that comes with your professional liability insurance would cover you.
Some clinic owners would like you to put their name and address on your insurance certificate for whatever reason and there is no problem with doing this. If you need to do this you can contact our insurance broker Claire Cosme, at ccosme@bflcanada.ca.

Business Tip of the Week
Don’t Let Self-Awareness Become Self-Doubt
It’s important to have a healthy awareness of your own limitations. But what should you do when your self-awareness starts to spiral into self-doubt? Here are four strategies to help you restore your confidence:
- Channel an alter ego that can help you gain some perspective. Taking on the persona of someone more confident can help you acknowledge the challenges you face without letting them completely take you over.
- View yourself through the lens of others. How would a friend respond if they heard you being hard on yourself?
- Learn to recognize and ignore unhelpful, uninformed feedback. Recognize that not every opinion is useful.
- Reframe negative self-talk. Identify your internal voices and intentionally replace them with a more positive, productive narrative.

Resistance exercise, disability, and pain catastrophizing in obese adults with back pain
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of two different resistance exercise protocols on self-reported disability, fear avoidance beliefs, pain catastrophizing, and back pain symptoms in obese, older adults with low back pain (LBP).
Methods: Obese adults (n = 49, 60-85 yr) with chronic LBP were randomized into a total body resistance exercise intervention (TOTRX), lumbar extensor exercise intervention (LEXT), or a control group (CON). Main outcomes included perceived disability (Oswestry Disability Index, Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire). Psychosocial measures included the Fear Avoidance Beliefs survey, Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia, and Pain Catastrophizing Scale. LBP severity was measured during three functional tasks: walking, stair climbing, and chair rise using an 11-point numerical pain rating scale.
Results: The TOTRX group had greater reductions in self-reported disability scores due to back pain (Oswestry Disability Index, Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire) compared with those in the LEXT (P < 0.05). The Pain Catastrophizing Scale scores decreased in the TOTRX group compared with that in the CON group by month 4 (64.3% vs 4.8%, P < 0.05). Pain severity during chair rise activity and walking was decreased in both the LEXT and TOTRX groups relative to the CON group.
Conclusions: Greater reductions in perceived disability due to LBP can be achieved with TOTRX compared with those achieved with LEXT. Pain catastrophizing and pain severity decreased most with TOTRX. The positive change in psychological outlook may assist obese, older adults with chronic back pain in reconsidering the harmfulness of the pain and facilitate regular participation in other exercise programs.
