This session will be taking a dive into the complex condition known as fibromyalgia, a disorder characterized by widespread pain as well as sleep, fatigue and cognitive difficulties. The exact definition, cause(s), diagnosis, treatment, and even its very existence remain debated at times. However, there are specific diagnostic criteria outlined by the leading medical associations. Despite being a controversial condition, it has an estimated prevalence between 2-4% in populations all over the world.

Massage therapists are often one of the first healthcare providers sought out for relief, so RMTs can play a role in screening for fibromyalgia in their assessments. From there, it is important to refer to MDs for ruling out other conditions and to confirm diagnosis if it has not been established. RMTs can also offer some mild, short-term relief of symptoms with manual therapy and offer the best available evidence for self-management strategies as home care. Co-management with an interdisciplinary team is often advised, especially in more severe cases, and RMTs can be a part of an effective circle of care.
